On 15 May 2018, TURKPA Secretariat jointly with the Writers` Union of Azerbaijan, organized an event dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the famous Kyrgyz writer and thinker Chingiz Aitmatov.
The event gathered parliamentarians, representatives of diplomatic corps, famous writers and other public figures who knew Chingiz Aitmatov in his lifetime. After the photo exhibition organized by the Secretariat, the event was opened by Secretary General Altynbek Mamaiusupov and then addressed by Mr. Anar Rzayev, Chairman of Writers’ Union of Azerbaijan.
Speaking about importance of the event, Secretary General also noted that Chingiz Aitmatov was a great friend of Azerbaijan, being awarded with the highest honorary titles and known as the most beloved writer of all peoples living in the territory of the former Soviet republics, while his works were translated into 76 languages. Mr. Mamaiusupov also noted that Chingiz Aitmatov was an honorary guest at many international forums held in Azerbaijan and met with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Chingiz Aitmatov repeatedly assessed the work implemented under the leadership of the Azerbaijani President as a great achievement of the Turkic world.
Speaking about the achievements of the Kyrgyz culture, Mr. Anar Rzayev assessed Chingiz Aitmatov as one of the highest values given to the world by this culture. Mr. Rzayev mentioned the most popular writings of Chingiz Aitmatov which had an enormous impact on moral and ethical values of societies.
Then the event was continued with demonstration of the video on life and literary legacy of Chingiz Aitmatov.
The event was addressed by Mr. Bakyt Usupov, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Kyrgyz Republic to Azerbaijan, Mr. Isa Habibbayli, member of the Milli Mejlis and Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, Ms. Gunay Afandiyeva, President of the Turkic Culture and Heritage Foundation, Mr. Erkan Özoral, Ambassador of Turkey in Azerbaijan, Mr. Musa Guliyev, member of the Milli Mejlis and Head of the Azerbaijan-Kyrgyzstan inter-parliamentary friendship group and Mr. Sabir Rustamkhanly, Azerbaijani poet and philologist and other guests.
Mr. Askar Aitmatov, Chingiz Aitmatov’s son expressed his gratitude for paying a tribute to his father and thanked everyone who had made contribution to the organization of the event. Mr. Aitmatov also shared some memories about his father related to various periods of his creative activity.
The event was concluded with adoption of appeal to the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on behalf of the participants regarding a plea on naming one of the streets of Baku in honour of Chingiz Aitmatov.
