Meeting of Chairs of Committees on Foreign Affairs of Parliaments of Turkic States took place in Baku

On 25 April 2024, the Meeting of Chairs of Committees on Foreign Affairs of Parliaments of Turkic States hosted by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan took place in Baku.

The event was attended by chairs and deputy chairs of committees on foreign affairs of the parliaments of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Türkiye, Uzbekistan, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Secretary General of TURKPA and other officials.

The meeting was addressed by Chairman of the Committee on Foreign and Interparliamentary Relations of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Samad Seyidov, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Aidos Sarym, Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense, Security and Migration of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic Leila Lurova, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye Fuat Oktay, Chairperson of the Committee on International Affairs and Interparliamentary Relations of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Dilorom Favzieva, Chairperson of the Committee on Law, Political Affairs and Foreign Relations of the Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Yasemin Öztürk and Secretary General of TURKPA Mehmet Süreyya Er.

The participants emphasized the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in expanding cooperation among the Turkic states in political, economic, social, cultural, humanitarian and other areas, and the role of TURKPA as a significant platform in strengthening brotherly and friendly relations of Turkic states at the inter-parliamentary level. Discussions focused on enhancing contacts among the Turkic states at various levels, expanding relations within the framework of TURKPA and development of mutually beneficial cooperation within regional and international organizations. The participants also touched on the role of inter-parliamentary friendship groups in strengthening relations.

In his speech, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er noted the significant role of parliamentary diplomacy against the backdrop of political developments, tensions and new challenges in the world. He noted that the strong will of the Turkic states for cooperation gave impetus and dynamism to the interaction within the framework of TURKPA as the parliamentary dimension of Turkic cooperation. Secretary General highlighted the importance of such meetings in coordinating the positions on issues of common interest and expressed belief that the meeting would contribute to the expansion of cooperation.
