On 6-7 October 2022, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er took part at the International Research and Practice Conference titled "CIS Convention on the Standards of Democratic Elections: Open Space for International Cooperation" held in St. Petersburg. The event co-organized by the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, CIS Executive Committee and Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, was dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the CIS Convention on the Standards of Democratic Elections, Electoral Rights and Freedoms.
The conference was attended by more than 200 participants, including parliamentarians, representatives of international organizations and election administration bodies of various countries and experts.
The program of the two-days event featured four roundtables on "Standards for Democratic Elections", "Youth Choice", "Best Practices for Organizing Elections" and "Election Observation". The participants shared the experience of administration of elections in their respective countries. Discussions were focused on the application of democratic standards in the conduct of elections and referenda, best practices and innovations, participation of women and youth in the electoral process and international observation of elections and referenda.
On 7 October, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er delivered a speech during the ceremonial plenary session of the conference. Noting elections and referenda as the main form of expression of will of people, Secretary General emphasized the role of election observation missions in the ensuring openness and transparency of electoral process. He touched upon the meetings between the election observation missions of TURKPA and IPA CIS, and mentioned that the exchange of experience and views during such meetings contributed to the improvement of observation process and development of cooperation of the two organizations.
An exhibition titled "Advanced Technologies in Electoral Process" was also jointly organized by the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation and Central Commission for Elections and Referenda of the Kyrgyz Republic, in the framework of the Conference.
