Seventh meeting of the TURKPA Commission on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Issues

On 16 May 2019, the Seventh Meeting of the TURKPA Commission on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs was held in Ankara and hosted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (GNAT). The main item of the meeting’s agenda was “The UN Sustainable Development Goals on Gender Issues. Cultural Identity of Modern Family Values in Turkic-speaking Countries (perspectives in legislation)”.

The meeting that brought together parliamentarians and experts from the member countries, representatives of diplomatic corps of the member countries accredited in Ankara, as well as other guests, was chaired by Ms. Sevinj Huseynova, Vice-Chair of the Commission and member of Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The participants noted the family as the main social core in any society and the importance of strengthening of family economy and preserving positive cultural identity of the society. Stressing the significance of gender equality as a key driver of socio-economic development, they touched upon family values and cultural identities in Turkic-speaking countries relating the UN Sustainable Development Goals on gender issues, discussed perspectives in national legislations as well as national policy related to the subject and exchanged views on cooperation, information exchange and joint actions among member countries directed to improve families’ life.

Report and recommendation on the matter was approved by the Commission to be submitted to the Ninth Plenary Session of TURKPA that will take place in 2019 in Azerbaijan.
