Grand National Assembly of Türkiye

April 23, 1920, when the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye was established, is one of the most important dates in the thousands of years of history of the Turkic nation. The motto of the National Struggle, which launched in the aftermath of the First World War, “The determination and decision of the nation will save independence of the nation” was embodied in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye; the War of Independence was managed by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye. The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye is therefore also known as the “Ghazi Assembly”.

The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, under the roof of which the Republic of Türkiye was established, executes its legislative duty with the authority receiving from the Turkish nation on the basis of “Sovereignty belongs to the Nation”. According to the Constitution of the Republic of Türkiye, this duty cannot be delegated.

Among the seven parts of the Constitution in which the third called “Basic Organs of the Republic” where the first part titled “Legislative” there are regulations on the GNAT in Articles 75 to 100.

By means of Constitutional amendment in 2017, the number of deputies was increased from 550 to 600; following the amendment, the general election was held on April 24, 2018 under the presidential system.

The power to propose a law belongs to the deputies with one or more signatures. In order to start discussions in the General Assembly of the GNAT, 200 deputies, which is 1/3 of the total number must be present. The General Assembly shall take decisions by the absolute majority of those attending the meeting. The majority for decision can, under no circumstances, be less than one plus a quarter of the total number of members.

Members of the GNAT are elected for a five-year term. A legislative term covers the period between two elections. According to the Rules of Procedures of the GNAT, a legislative year commences on October 1 and ends on September 30. Following the General Elections of 14 May 2023, the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye started its 28th Legislative Term on 2 June 2023.
