Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations held its Tenth Meeting

On 9 March 2023, the 10th Meeting of the Commission on Legal Affairs and International Relations hosted by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (GNAT) on the theme of “15th Anniversary of TURKPA: Cooperation between Member States” was held online format. Members of the Commission, parliamentary experts and representatives of the TURKPA Secretariat attended the meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Erol Kaya, Chairman of the Commission, member of the GNAT. Members of the commission, Javanshir Feyziyev Deputy of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ruslan Rustemov Deputy of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Nurzhigit Kadyrbekov Deputy of the Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, Yüksel Özkan Deputy of the GNAT, and Mehmet Süreyya Er Secretary General of TURKPA delivered opening speeches at the meeting. Recep Seker, member of the GNAT Delegation to TURKPA also attended the meeting.

Chairman Erol Kaya started his speech by giving information about the earthquakes that took place in Kahramanmaraş in Türkiye on February 6, 2023 and caused great destruction in 11 provinces in total.

In these earthquakes, which are called the "disaster of the century", which directly affected approximately 12% of Türkiye's surface area and 13.5 million people, 230 thousand buildings were destroyed and 645 thousand buildings became unusable. On the other hand, it was reported that a total of 271 thousand people participated in search and rescue activities in the region, including 11,500 personnel and rescue teams from 90 countries. In addition, it was noted that all deputies of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye served in the region to accompany the works on site.

Mr. Kaya shared that construction of 405 thousand houses and 83 thousand village houses which have started for the rebuilding of 11 cities, will be completed within a year. Mr. Kaya thanked all the countries that rushed to help, and especially for the support of the valuable fraternal TURKPA member countries in the person of the commission members.

At the meeting, the Commission elaborated items of the agenda respectively, and approved the Commission Report and Recommendations for submission to the 12th Plenary Session to be held in Ankara.

Regarding the agenda, proposal on changing the name of the Commission on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian Affairs into “the Commission on Education, Culture, Social and Humanitarian Affairs” was evaluated. Moreover, the proposal on establishment of two separate commissions was negotiated in order to make preparations for the Republic of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to be included in the work of TURKPA immediately if they become members.
