TURKPA attended Conference on “Global Challenges and Threats in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic”
On 15 April 2021, TURKPA took part in the International Parliamentary Conference on “Global Challenges and Threats in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Terrorism and Violent Extremism”.
The conference was co-organized by Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS, OSCE PA, Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and UN Office of Counter-Terrorism as a logical continuation of similar discussions held in 2017 and 2019. The event brought together heads and members of parliaments, including members of the TURKPA Council of Assembly – Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova, TURKPA Chairperson-in-Office and Chairperson of Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Talant Mamytov, Chairman of Jogorku Kenesh of the Kyrgyz Republic, as well as Mr. Nurlan Abdirov, Deputy Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan and heads of international organisations.
Following an opening session, the participants made presentations and speeches in four thematic sessions titled “Legal Mechanisms of International Cooperation in Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism”, “Assessing the Terrorist Threat and Efforts to Prevent Violent Extremism”, “Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Victims of Terrorism and Addressing Their Needs” and “Democracies Facing the COVID-19 Pandemic”. Assessing the terrorism as one of the main challenges in the security sphere which became more complicated to combat against at the background of the pandemic, the participants exchanged views on efficient mechanisms of international cooperation and improvement of legislative support for security on a global scale.
