TURKPA took part at the 3rd Conference of NAM Parliamentary Network

On 25 March 2024, Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er and Secretary of Commission on Environment, Natural Resources and Health Protection Aynura Abutalibova participated at the Third Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network (NAM PN) held in Geneva, Switzerland.

The event took place under the theme “Revitalizing parliamentary action in combating climate change” on the sidelines of the 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). The meeting chaired by the Chairperson of the NAM PN and Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova was attended by 53 delegations from the member parliaments and international organizations.

In her opening speech, Head of Parliament stressed that the Network continued to grow adding new members to its ranks. She pointed out that the Parliamentary Network represented more than half of the parliaments of NAM member states and that demonstrated the intention of the NAM PN to strengthen solidarity and cooperation among the member parliaments along with its commitment to the promotion of values and principles of the NAM.

The event continued with the statements and exchange of views by heads of delegations of member parliaments and partner organizations. The participants underlined the parliamentary activities directed to the climate change challenges as a significant step.

Secretary General Mehmet Süreyya Er also delivered a speech at the Conference. Secretary General expressed belief that the Conference would contribute to the further strengthening of the authority of the Organization along with the expansion of multilateral relations in the path of global parliamentary diplomacy. He noted that the Conference was devoted to a topical and important global issue. Mentioning the global nature of climate change, which required to take concerted actions to combat its effects, he noted that TURKPA member states, as countries joining these efforts, gave ample space to the issues of addressing environmental problems in the cooperation process within the framework of TURKPA. Secretary General touched on the cooperation formed between TURKPA and NAM PN, and in this context, stressed that contacts between the two organizations in the recent years had brought closer the shifting of cooperation to a qualitatively new stage.

During the Conference, TURKPA was granted an observer status in the NAM PN.

The event concluded with the adoption of the Geneva Declaration.

In the frame of the 148th IPU Assembly, a memoranda of understanding was signed between the IPU and NAM PN.
